BATON ROUGE, La.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Shaw Group Inc. (NYSE: SHAW) announced today that its Inner Harbor Navigation Canal (IHNC) Surge Barrier project achieved its milestone of 100-year-level storm protection for the greater New Orleans area prior to the 2011 hurricane season, which begins June 1. After receiving the contract in 2008, Shaw has nearly completed construction on the largest design-build project ever awarded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, meeting the Corps' aggressive June 2011 deadline for the 100-year mark.
Shaw has worked tirelessly to obtain this heightened level of storm protection, using innovative strategies to achieve speed and precision in order to meet safety and scheduling goals.
The final component to achieving the milestone was the recent installation of the surge barrier's sector gates, one of the project's three gate structures. The 26-foot-high, two-mile barrier is designed to help protect greater New Orleans from a 100-year-level storm and is a key part of the Corps' Hurricane and Storm Damage Risk Reduction System. Using decades of design-build experience and expertise, Shaw provided design, construction and program management services.
This project is a significant accomplishment in design, construction and execution and is considered vital to southeast Louisiana, said George Bevan, president of Shaw's Environmental & Infrastructure Group. Shaw has worked tirelessly to obtain this heightened level of storm protection, using innovative strategies to achieve speed and precision in order to meet safety and scheduling goals.
With construction nearly complete, the surge barrier's major components are in place and capable of mitigating the risks associated with a 100-year-level storm.
