Graphic Skin Competition Underway for Rally Fighter to be Built during IMTS

In preparation for the building of an automobile on the show floor at IMTS – The International Manufacturing Technology Show 2012, show management and Local Motors announce that the IMTS 2012 Rally Fighter Graphic Skin competition is underway.  IMTS takes place Sept. 10-15 at Chicago’s McCormick Place and features the most advanced manufacturing technology in the world. The submission portion of the competition will end July 24.  Then it is the voters’ turn from Thursday, July 26 – August 2 to narrow down the selection.

To highlight the current and future impact of collaborative manufacturing, two Rally Fighters will be showcased at IMTS. The first was built at the Local Motors micro-factory in Chandler, Ariz., in March, and has and will continue to travel to various events, including the recent Gumball 3000 Cross-Country Rally, on its way to IMTS in September.

IMTS showcases the basis of all manufacturing and the technology that makes everything from life-saving medical devices to the world’s most advanced aerospace equipment. Visitors sense the excitement and energy from the moment they walk through the doors.

The second IMTS Rally Fighter will be built on the show floor in the Emerging Technology Center, 24 hours a day for five days and, on the sixth day the car wrap will be unveiled for all to see in a ceremony held at the AMT Manufacturing Stage.  The design for the second car needs to reflect the feel of the actual show – energetic, awe-inspiring, controlled chaos.  It’s similar to the feeling one has when visiting Times Square in New York City.

At IMTS 2012, visitors will experience the hum of machines actually working on the show floor.  There will be more than 1.2 million sq. ft. filled with the industry’s latest, most innovative and dynamic technology.

“Hearing the sounds of these machines and devices as the equipment transforms raw materials — steel, iron, plastic, ceramics, composites, and alloys — from their original state into what will become durable goods — airplanes, cars, appliances, and consumer goods that are used every day — is an amazing experience,” Says Peter Eelman, IMTS

Vice President – Exhibitions and Communications. “The IMTS Rally Fighter should represent the essence of high-tech modern manufacturing.   We want a cool car to both ignite passion for the industry and demonstrate its importance to everyday life.”

The Rally Fighter is the world’s first open source production vehicle, designed and developed by a collaboration between a global community and Local Motors, a new American car company, at http://www.localmotors.com/. This interactive manufacturing experience allows customers to actually build their own Rally Fighter with professional supervision.  The process is efficient and sustainable at 10x faster development and 100x less capital intensity than traditional models.

The competition information can be found at www.LocalMotors.com/IMTS or on IMTS.com/rallyfighter.  The designer of the winning skin will receive $1,050 along with highlighted status on The Forge and exclusive Local Motors winners gear. Designers can join the challenge by creating and entering a car graphic skin, or by collaborating with other designers via comments and votes.

“Collaborative manufacturing and disruptive technologies are shaping the future of manufacturing.  We want to give the IMTS community a taste of collaborative manufacturing in anticipation of the show.  We’re encouraging everyone to get their illustration skills ready and join the competition’ continues Eelman. “We’re excited to continue this process that will culminate with a round-the-clock build of the Rally Fighter during the six days of IMTS this fall.”

John “Jay” Rogers, Local Motors’ CEO says, "The image of IMTS in the last six months has been made famous all over the country by the first wrap designed by competition winner Heather True. IMTS is giving another designer an opportunity to become famous and highlight IMTS with second winning vehicle wrap. Could you be the winner?"
