Roll-Kraft Upgrades Its Finite Element Analysis (F.E.A.) System

Due to an increased demand for finite element analysis services for both the roll forming and tubing industries, Roll-Kraft has found it necessary to upgrade its current system. This update has included integrating a new high-performance, dual-processor computer and upgrading the COPRA RF FEA software from DataM in Germany to take advantage of the new computing power.

The new release of the FEA software has increased functionality. The engineer will now be able to designate which roll passes are driven and non-driven, as well as defining the line speed and accounting for friction in the tooling. The program will also now able to simulate non-symmetrical, formed-up welded profiles. Early tests have resulted in a calculation time reduction of approximately 75% vs. the previous FEA system. The increased capacity will allow Roll-Kraft to utilize the FEA more effectively during the design phase of the project.

These improvements in both speed and functionality will benefit customers in several ways. The decrease in calculation time will permit the running of more simulations of various tooling design concepts during the engineering phase, in order to develop the best possible solution for producing an accurate profile. This will, in turn, decrease the amount of time a set of tooling spends in the testing phase. The addition of the rotating rolls, line speed, and friction functions will better allow the prediction of possible surface condition problems in the finished product.

With many industries switching to lighter, stronger materials and more complex profiles, the need for a scientific approach to tooling design has become necessary. Roll-Kraft often utilizes the FEA system in an R&D role and collaborates with existing and potential customers to determine the feasibility of roll forming these advanced materials and products. The ultimate goal of this investment in technology is to provide better service and support to customers and make Roll-Kraft the technological leader in the tube & pipe and roll-forming industry.

Roll-Kraft has its headquarters in Mentor, Ohio, and maintains offices in Frankfurt, Illinois (Roll-Kraft Northern) and Woodbridge, Ontario, Canada (Roll-Kraft Ltd.). Phone (440) 205-3100. Web site at www.roll-kraft.com.
